Pilot NFI Suriname

Within the collaboration between the Governments of Suriname and Austria the initiative was taken to explore a new technology, which entails the use of aerial imagery in combination with field sampling as part of a two-phase inventory design. With this methodology it would be possible to achieve the same results with reduced costs compared to an entirely field-based NFI.

It was within this context that the SBB and the Austrian Natural Resources Management and International Cooperation Agency (ANRICA) initiated the pilot NFI project, carried out in the period 2012-2014 to test this methodology. The results acquired within this pilot project are described within this report, as well as some facts about the current forest biomass in Suriname. Additionally the methodology is described, as the lessons learnt through this collaborative effort. It will serve as a basis for the further development of the complete NFI.
